The holidays, a joyous time, but also a stressful time, especially during a pandemic! Everyone experiences stress, but how much is too much? Everyday pressures create stress, and to a certain degree, we need it. Stress can help us make deadlines, achieve goals, and push through our comfort zones, but when miss managed can lead to some pretty serious health problems. We’re here to help with these natural remedies for stress.

What Exactly is Stress?

Stress is the body’s natural response to the events or demands in everyday life. It can result from pressure at work or home, traumatic events, changes in your life, school, etc. During stressful times our brains release the hormones adrenaline and cortisol in response to our environment. When these hormones are released, the body responds with the “fight or flight” instinct; it’s the bodies way of trying to protect itself. This means we experience increased heart rate and breathing, muscle tension and sweating during times of stress. The “fight or flight” response is necessary, especially when it comes to life-threatening situations like avoiding a car accident. However, stress isn’t that black and white, the body can view many everyday situations and respond in the same way. When stress levels are prolonged, they can become dangerous, leading to physical and mental health issues.

What are the Signs?

Stress can affect us mentally, physically, emotionally and it can affect our behaviour. Some signs and symptoms of too much stress are:

  • Feelings of depression
  • Irritability
  • Memory function issues
  • Headaches
  • Difficulty learning and concentrating
  • Decreased immune system function
  • Change in eating habits
  • Diarrhoea
  • Anxiety or nervousness
  • Constantly worrying
  • High blood pressure
  • Decreased libido
  • Physical pain or tension in the muscles
  • Disrupted sleep

Natural Remedies for Stress

It is important to listen to our bodies, be thoughtful about what we put in them, and practice self-care. Selfcare can sound like a day at the salon, but it can actually be as simple as getting enough sleep, taking many short breaks throughout your day, meditating, choosing a herbal tea over coffee or an energy drink, seeking help from family, friends or professionals, or all of the above.

Managing stress takes a whole hosts actions, but how those actions look vary for everyone. Regular exercise is a big one, a nutrient-dense diet, and limiting your caffeine and alcohol consumption can all attribute to having less of a stress response in our daily activities. There are also these wonderful things called adaptogens! Adaptogens are plants, herbs, mushrooms or roots that help the body adapt to different forms of stress. Stemming from ayurvedic medicine with centuries of use, many adaptogens have been proven to have a number of health benefits when taken regularly. Adaptogens often come in powder, tincture, capsule or in our case a ready-made tea! At Thrive Remedies, we’ve made organic wellness teas with carefully selected adaptogens specifically targeted to our stress response. Adaptogens are not a cure-all but they help, and whether we realize it or not, they motivate us to make a choice. In the end, we have the power to healthfully manage stress through the multitude of actions we take every day.
